PORT ADELAIDE coach Lauren Arnell has paid tribute to acting captain Justine Mules-Robinson, who starred in Saturday’s win over West Coast in her milestone 75th AFLW game.

Mules-Robinson booted two goals in two third quarter minutes to put her side on course for what seemed an unlikely victory in Perth after a slow start.

The former Crow has played an important but rarely noticed role as a small forward this season but got her reward as her side overturned a scoreless opening quarter and 19-point deficit to win 7.7 (49) to 5.6 (36) at Mineral Resources Park at Lathlain.

“I don't think she'd be the most talked about player on broadcasts or anything like that, but she's our skipper right now with Janelle Cuthbertson out with an ACL and there's no more selfless person that I've played with or coached in footy,” Arnell said of Mules-Robinson.

“And her influence in that space and her resilience on and off field is exceptional for a young group, and to see her get on the scoreboard when largely her role is usually the defensive stuff, and just getting to ground level and helping out the talls - those two goals in that moment in time in the game were crucial.

“And, I'm just so stoked for someone like that, to have played 75 games in our league, for so many seasons where they're short seasons as well - it's absolute testament to her character, and I'm so pleased for her that the girls got the win today.”

Eagle Ella Roberts dominated the first quarter with six contested marks and 11 disposals before first-year midfielder Shineah Goody was tasked with stopping her influence.

Goody kept Roberts to just one disposal in the second quarter as the Power kept the Eagles scoreless and booted three goals itself to take the lead into the main change.

Roberts would finish with a game-high 27 disposals but her influence after the first quarter was not as impactful, and Arnell was pleased with her side’s response after another slow opening.

“I gave them a little bit (of a spray) to be fair, at quarter time,” the coach explained. “I think our first quarters in the last month haven't been great and so it's something that we've spoken about a lot.

“And, yeah, Roberts is obviously a pretty classy player… and Shineah Goody did a pretty good job I would have thought on Roberts. I think (she) still had a heap of footy and is obviously a pretty special player (but I’m) really pleased again with Goody. I mean, she was round one rising star nominee, and I asked her to play a role for the team, and no questions asked, she just went and got it done.”

While fitness was a concern at the end of last season, Arnell and her staff challenged the side to be able to back up, game after game.

And she was thrilled with how the side navigated a challenging period of four games in 16 days, including two trips to Melbourne and Saturday’s stop in Perth, coming away with the club’s first back-to-back AFLW wins in its short history in the competition.

“I think that was our 27th game as a team, and our first time we've won two wins in a row and off the back of four games in 16 days - three of those being travel (away).

“I'm just really proud of the group. I think the hard work put in by the group, particularly over the last probably nine or 10 months, where we challenged them in the off-season to go away and urgently get fitter and do the work, we're seeing that pay off and again, four games in 16 days - I think you can see the group has worked exceptionally hard, and we just have to continue to be diligent and trust our style of game intensity clearly rose in that second quarter.”

It was the third time Port had played the Eagles in Perth in three seasons, and its first win against them.

And while Arnell will be pleased to come away from Perth with no injuries, there will be little rest. The Power will travel home on Sunday, refresh and reset and be ready to face Collingwood back at Alberton on Thursday night from 7:15pm ACDT.

That game is part of the AFLW’s Pride Round with the side to wear a special guernsey designed by midfielders Abbey Dowrick and Hannah Ewings.

Tickets remain available online, with free entry for children under the age of 18.
