Port Adelaide winger Jase Burgoyne has returned to Alberton fit and firing for pre-season training, alongside his fellow one-to-four-year players.
Burgoyne worked hard during the break to put on size and improve his strength, to increase his ability in the contest.
The 21-year-old spoke to the Adelaide media on Monday about being back at Alberton, his confidence as a fourth-year player, and the work he’s done in the off-season.
Burgoyne on day one of pre-season
“It’s pretty hot outside, so coming back I was a bit nervous for the heat, but yeah, all the boys look in good shape. And yeah, a solid hit out first day back. So we’re looking forward to the rest of the week. Obviously have had the new draftees come in. They're all fitting in pretty well at the moment.”
Burgoyne on being a fourth-year player
“I mean, it's gone pretty fast. Just felt like yesterday I was walking into the club with my draftees. Now we're four years in, and we’re all still on the list and all still kicking so, yeah, it's gone so fast.”
Burgoyne in his confidence coming into pre-season
“Yeah obviously I put the work in last year, I guess. And I know what I have to do, and I know that I have to push myself again toward bigger and better things, and I feel like this year I've done that in the off-season. I went away and put on some size and got a bit fitter. So yeah, definitely feel like this year is going to be a bigger year for me.”
Burgoyne on his work in the off-season
“I haven't put too much weight on, but I've definitely filled out a little bit more, which is nice, and it's definitely noticeable, and I definitely feel stronger in the gym. (It will help with) more contest work stuff, you know, obviously, as a winger these days, I'm in the stoppage a fair bit. So, just a bit more strength is nice to be able to bang with the big bodies.”

Burgoyne on his own position
“We haven't really spoken about too much in depth. I guess they will just use me wherever they think I should be. Obviously, I was pretty happy in the wing. I spent, obviously most of the year there, and then went back in the finals, and I was pretty comfortable there as well. So I guess where they need me to play, I'm happy to go. But yeah, we haven't really talked about too much depth at the moment.
“(I really like playing) on the wing. We have such a good defence group of young blokes coming through. You know, we had Josh Sinn step up and we have Logan Evans and, you know, Dylan Williams back there, and Kane Farrell. So obviously, if it's not me, we have so many options back there to fill that void.”
Burgoyne on training alongside brother Rome as part of the father-son academy
“Yeah it's good. Obviously he got overlooked in the draft. And Port have given him a pretty good opportunity to come out here and train with us in the pre-season. And yeah, he's been living with me for the past 10 weeks now. And I’ve taken him under my wing and took him running and into the gym, and he's in pretty good shape. So it's definitely a pretty good experience for him doing for full pre-season with us.
