CONNOR ROZEE is still working on his resolutions for 2025 but the Port Adelaide captain is excited about the club’s new-look forward line, featuring one of his best mates.
Among the Power’s offseason recruits are forwards Jack Lukosius, Joe Richards and draftee Joe Berry.
Tall forward Charlie Dixon has retired and players like Francis Evans and Quinton Narkle have also departed.
Rozee is close friends with Lukosius, with the former Gold Coast Sun part of his captain’s bridal party at his recent wedding.
Port Adelaide finished the 2024 home-and-away season second on the ladder, before falling to Grand Finalist Sydney in the Preliminary Final.
Ahead of the Power players returning to pre-season training following the Christmas break, Rozee said he was particularly excited about how the forward line will shape up this year.
“Obviously, with Charlie leaving, we're going to have to play a little bit different to what we did last year,” the skipper said at Alberton on Tuesday.
“But to have (Lukosius), Todd (Marshall), Mitch (Georgiades), those mobile sort of forwards, hopefully we’ll see a little bit of a change to our game style and a refreshing change that hopefully can take us to that next step.”
With Sam Powell-Pepper and Jeremy Finlayson also to return from long-term injury layoffs, Rozee said there would no doubt be some tinkering to the forward line to find the best combination.
“That's what preseason is for, it’s for trying out new things,” he said.
“I think the only way for us to take that next step is to make small changes, and that's what we've done.”
Rozee is coming off his first season as club captain.
While 2024 didn’t finish as he would have liked on the field, it was a bumper year off it for the 24-year-old who welcomed his first child, Audrey, and married his partner Maisie.
It’ll be a tough act to follow, leaving Rozee still pondering any new year’s resolutions.
“I was trying to think of something the other day,” he smiled. “I don't think I can top 2024 in terms of off the field, but from a football point of view, to win a premiership, that's what we come into every year wanting to do so there's probably one thing that I haven't quite ticked the box.”
Rozee was speaking at Alberton Oval as the club announced it had received $17 million towards the next stage of the historic venue’s transformation.
A key feature of the improvements will be integrating new women’s changerooms into the MG High Performance Centre, bringing the women’s and men’s programs together.
“I think the change from beforehand, where our facilities were really good already, but to see the significant changes happen since I've been at the club has been amazing,” Rozee said.
“I think we've got some of the best facilities now in the competition, and to see our AFLW program getting that now as well is really special.”
Rozee and his teammates will return for pre-season training on Thursday.
