Port Adelaide defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher is expected to miss the start of the AFL premiership season with a back issue.

After a training incident on Wednesday, scans showed the 26-year-old has sustained an acute lumbar disc injury.

Zerk-Thatcher will be unavailable for pre-season games, with a timeline for his return in the regular season to become clearer in the coming weeks.
