Jasmine Sowden is slowly getting used to the calmness of living in Adelaide.

Having grown up with eleven siblings in country Victoria, she misses the kind of “chaos” that comes with having eight sisters and three brothers.

“The first two weeks in Adelaide I just had too much time, and it was just really quiet,” the 18-year-old explained.

“I’m used to someone always coming up to me and saying, ‘Hey, can you come play?’ or ‘Can you take me to do this?’.

“There’s no line-up for the bathroom anymore, which is good, but then obviously coming from, I wouldn't call it chaos, but a little bit of chaos to having too much time over in Adelaide kind of had me thinking I need to get hobbies Adelaide style, not country things.

“I’m still trying to work on them, still adjusting.”

Sowden made the move across from Victoria having heard her name called by Port Adelaide with pick 52 in December’s first fully national AFLW draft.

She turned 18 the next day and was in Adelaide a day after that.

Her older sister Taylor Sowden has since joined her in South Australia and the pair lives with a host family not far from Alberton Oval, making the adjustment slightly easier.

Taylor has signed with West Adelaide in the SANFLW, and she is just one of eight talented footballers in the Sowden clan including dad Mick, who still pulls on the boots.

“At one stage five of us girls started playing together,” Jasmine Sowden explained. “There was a time where we had four of us on the field at once in a grand final together, which is pretty cool.

“It’s always been very competitive, so I think I've got a few (siblings) chasing me right now.

“But that’s helped because I think it's come out in my game sense, because I'm very competitive and it's made me who I am.

“And there's no excuse, there’s always someone to do something with. Whenever we were bored, there was always someone with a footy in their hands or something like that.”

And the family supported Port Adelaide even before Sowden was drafted to the club.

“The main reason we started barracking for Port Adelaide was because of Never Tear Us Apart,” she explained.

“It became our family motto, being such a big family.”

While she is missing her siblings, Sowden has a new sisterhood at Alberton, joining a group of Port Adelaide’s AFLW players taking part in optional skills sessions throughout the week ahead of official pre-season training.

She has described moving states and into an elite footy environment as “a big eye opener”, particularly because she didn’t know anyone in Adelaide.

The club has set her up with forward Julia Teakle as a “buddy” and the pair have bonded over having similar journeys to Alberton from living in respective regional areas interstate.

“She’s been taking me under her wing but leaving me to do my own thing as well,” Sowden said. “Because I think she knows I'm that type of person that needs to be a bit more independent than most people that come over to a new state.

“She hasn’t been overpowering but has been checking up and then leaving me alone. We catch up for coffee once or twice a week so that's been good.

“Shineah Goody’s been helping me get into the skills and stuff a bit more at training, just telling me what to do so I don't just stand there wondering what I’m supposed to be doing, but most of the girls have been doing that anyway.

“They’ve all been getting around me, just sending messages, like ‘hey, come grab a coffee’ or something like that.

“I’ve also been going to Westies training with Tay, just watching and kind of getting to know that crowd a little bit so I've got people I know outside of Port Adelaide.”

For the moment Sowden is enjoying getting to know her new Port Adelaide extended family and looking forward to her first season at Alberton.
