Port Adelaide assistant coach Josh Carr says it’s been important for the group to prepare well, this week, as they brace for Sydney’s best footy on Sunday.
The Power heads into Round 6 with a 2-3 win-loss record, sitting just below the Swans on the ladder, who are also seeking their third win for 2025.
Speaking at the SCG during captain’s run on Saturday, Carr touched on selection, Miles Bergman’s knee, and how the group managed to play their own game last weekend.
Carr on Sydney
“We prepared for their best footy, which is still really impressive. They're still finding their feet a bit with injuries and, you know, their game style and everything like that, with obviously, a new coach. But as we've seen, their best football is really good, and that's what we prepare for. And they're at home, and they haven't played here for a few weeks, so we're looking forward to that.”
Carr on one change at selection
“I think Darcy's first few weeks in the team this year is his pressure and hunt around the footy and even getting forward and kicking some goals. And good leadership in that forward line also. So he comes in and obviously replaces Joey Berry, who's obviously a young guy, started the year playing some senior games, and we thought with the two weeks as the sub, going back and building his confidence and also getting some really good footy and game time into him would be important. And he had a really good game for the Magpies, which was obviously important for him, for him and also for us.”
Carr on Joe Berry playing SANFL on Friday
“Yeah, it's never easy for young guys when they haven't played SANFL before and going back, it's a different game. But it's really good for young guys to play in, because it's contest, and you've got to be good in the contest. If you just want to get on the outside, you're not going to get rewarded. So, we thought it was important for him to get back there and play some contested footy and learn about that….and not saying he’s poor at that, but it's something that helps him.”
Carr on Miles Bergman’s knee
“He's tracking well, he trained in our main session, and the swelling has gone down. There's a little bit of bruising there, but, you know, he trained at 95 per cent and he'll be 100 per cent by time the game starts.”
Carr on Port Adelaide’s ability to play its own game last weekend
“Yeah, we feel like we got our balance right in the way that we played the game and with our game style. I think it gave everyone a bit of confidence that we're still a good team, because, you know, we hadn't really showed that, I reckon, leading into that game with our best footy and against a really good team. So I think it gave everyone a lot of confidence.
“It's a hard competition, and you know, you do have to enjoy your wins and to have that win against a really quality side. As I said, it gives us confidence to know when we do that, that we can beat some of the better teams in the competition.”
