PORT ADELAIDE co-captain Ollie Wines says he and Tom Jonas have been encouraged to lead by example by senior coach Ken Hinkley.

Port unveiled co-captains for the first time in the club’s history in 2019, and Wines says it is important the actions of the leaders help inspire the side.

“Ken’s always been big on leading with your actions,” Wines said on AFL 360.

“For me, it’s putting my head over the ball, running through someone every now and then, or laying a big tackle.

“If I can do that, then I don’t necessarily have to have 30-35 touches to really impact a game.

“I think Jona is probably in the same boat. He leads as that ferocious key back.

“I think we are in a pretty good place when we can lead like that - the boys tend to jump on.

“We don’t need to have outstanding games necessarily, in terms of stats, to impact as leaders.”

Wines revealed the senior coach wanted the newly appointed co-captains to have a bigger influence on the playing group moving forward.

“Kenny made some calls to relinquish a little bit of the control he had of the playing group back to Tommy Jonas and I as captains,” the 24-year-old said.

“We want to be the voice, and are the voice of the playing group, and we need to make calls for ourselves on what’s best for the playing group.

“Obviously, Ken is the coach and the buck stops with him but I guess off the field that comes down to us, that’s not up to Ken - he’s the coach on game day.”
