BOOTING 300 AFL goals is an achievement accomplished by just 184 players in the last century, and only 13 who are currently playing, yet Robbie Gray reaching the milestone for Port Adelaide at the weekend escaped everyone’s attention.
Granted it was a quiet game by Gray’s standards but the second of his two goals against Richmond, late in the third quarter from a 35-metre set shot after a free kick, should have at least rated a mention, not just because it brought his side within two points of the Tigers but because it pushed him past 299 career goals.
At Port Adelaide that ranks him second on the all-time scorers list for AFL players but he has a long way to go to catch Warren Tredrea at the top.
The former skipper and four-time John Cahill Medallist managed an incredible 549 goals from his 255 games at an average of 2.2 per game.
Gray’s 1.5 goals per game average is understandable and even more impressive given his ability to also run through the midfield at times.
2017 was his best year for goal scoring with 47 at 2.04 per game but he didn’t win the club’s leading goal kicker award that year, instead winning it in 2011 (32 goals) and 2018 (36).
And he has been known to kick a bag, although his best effort of six goals, including five in a quarter, came last season against Adelaide.
Having just celebrated his 200th game in Round 1, and with a list of accomplishments that include three John Cahill Medals, four Showdown Medals, the 2014 AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award and four All-Australian selections, 300 goals may not rank at the top for Gray.
But it is nevertheless a feat to celebrate.
Teammate Justin Westhoff will also hope to celebrate the milestone this week against West Coast.
The 2018 club best and fairest, who just played his 250th AFL game in Round 2, needs just four more goals to join Gray with 300 AFL goals.
