PORT ADELAIDE reigning best and fairest Justin Westhoff and experienced defender Matthew Broadbent have been named among the list of AFL free agents at the end of the season.

Both Westhoff and Broadbent are unrestricted free agents, which means they can automatically move to the club of their choice if they want to once their contract expires.

The AFL on Monday distributed the list of restricted and unrestricted free agent players to the 18 clubs across the competition.

Under the rules that were agreed between the AFL and AFL Players Association (AFLPA) in February 2010, restricted and unrestricted free agents may consider offers from rival clubs during the post-season period, following the 2019 Toyota AFL Premiership Season. An offer to a player only includes capped salary and capped ASA (Additional Service Agreements) amounts.

Under the AFL Player Rules, an unrestricted free agent may automatically move to the club of his choice. An offer to a restricted free agent may be matched by his club, which has right of first refusal over his services. If the restricted free agent player does not wish to remain with his original club, he must enter the draft or seek a trade.

Compensation in the form of AFL allocated draft picks will apply to clubs with a net loss of free agents, based on the formula determined by the AFL.

In 2019 we see the implementation of the following changes to Free Agency previously agreed between the AFL and AFLPA. The new conditions are as follows:

  • The condition that a player must have come out of contract after 8 years to then qualify for unrestricted free agency at 10 years has been removed. All Players coming out of contract after their eighth year are now unrestricted Free Agents.
  • A Player previously delisted by any Club (Delisted Free Agent) will be a Delisted Free Agent at the end of each subsequent contract.

Below is the 2019 Free Agency List which includes Restricted, Unrestricted and Delisted Free Agents (currently on Club lists) across the competition.
