PORT ADELAIDE has won the second of three Under 16 female Showdowns against Adelaide, this time enjoying a 37-point success over the Crows.
A fortnight ago the Power’s Under 16 Next Generation Academy kept Adelaide’s side goalless until the first quarter in a 56-point win.
The academies are made up of the best under-16 elite players from each of the eight SANFL clubs with those from West Adelaide, South Adelaide, Norwood and the Eagles representing Port Adelaide.
Players were nominated for the Academy programs following the Statewide Super Shield U15 competition held in September 2018.
On Wednesday night’s second game at Alberton, Port Adelaide’s coaching group challenged players to play in unfamiliar roles and in warm conditions the game started slowly.
Eventually the Power Academy got on top with the Schwartz twins Maddison and Chloe accounting for half of their side’s eight goals.
Coach Naomi Maidment said she was pleased with how her team responded to their challenge to develop across different positions.
“The game started slow in quite warm conditions, however once we got going we were really efficient going forward, at one point scoring four goals from four inside 50s,” she said.
“We looked to move the ball quickly and I thought the girls responded well after half time and began to get some more fluent ball movement.
“Both our rucks Jorja Hoopa and Teliya Hetaraka worked really hard all over the ground and Maddison Schwarz was really dangerous at both ends, using her endurance and pace to kick three of our goals.
The girls now have a small break before the final game in the series next month.
