THE PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB will allow Patrick Ryder and Sam Gray to explore the option to continue their careers elsewhere after a mutual decision that it would be in the best interests of all parties.
Ryder has played 243 AFL games including 73 since arriving at Alberton from Essendon at the end of the 2014 season.
The 31-year-old won All-Australian honours in 2017 - the same year he won the John Cahill Medal as Port Adelaide’s best and fairest.
The ruckman has kicked 15 goals in 17 games in 2019.
“Paddy has been a valued and much-loved member of our playing group since he came to Port Adelaide,” coach Ken Hinkley said.
“He’s been a fantastic servant of the club, a best and fairest winner and a terrific teammate and person to have around.
“Based on where the club’s ruck stocks are at, both Paddy and the club have reached a mutual decision that it would be best for him to explore his playing options.”
Gray joined the Power via the rookie draft after playing 68 SANFL games and winning the club’s SANFL best and fairest award in 2013.
The 27 year-old has featured in 96 AFL games for the club including 20 in 2019, booting 83 goals in six seasons.
“Sam has always represented the Port Adelaide Football Club at SANFL and AFL level with pride and passion, and he has made a significant contribution to the club,” Hinkley said.
“From a list management perspective, we have had ongoing discussions with Sam’s management and agree that it is in the best interests of the club, and of Sam, to give him a period of time to explore opportunities to play elsewhere in 2020.”
The club will now work with both Ryder and Gray and their management to ensure the best possible outcome for all parties.
