AHEAD of Port Adelaide’s Best and Fairest count on Friday night, portadelaidefc.com.au takes a look at who is in contention for the John Cahill and A.R. McLean medals.
The A.R. McLean Medal is awarded to Port Adelaide's best and fairest player in the SANFL. After the completion of every game, Port Adelaide's SANFL coaches and SANFL Manager Shane Grimm cast their votes, rating each player's performance between 0-5, with a maximum of 20 and minimum of 20 votes per player per game awarded.
The same process is undertaken in the AFL, with the Power's best and fairest player receiving the John Cahill Medal.
A.R. McLean contender - Trent McKenzie
Trent McKenzie had a very consistent season in Port’s SANFL side this season, eventually earning a call-up for the Power’s round 23 clash with Fremantle.
McKenzie averaged 21 possessions a game in 2019, disposing at a remarkable 97 per cent. He also averaged six marks, five rebound 50s and kicked seven goals for the season.
The former Gold Coast Sun was one of the Magpies’ best players in this year’s SANFL finals series, playing a key role in defence but also racking up plenty of the football across half-back.
The 27-year-old played 19 games for the Magpies in 2019, and should poll strongly throughout the year.
McKenzie’s standout performances:
Round 2 vs South Adelaide - 26 disposals, eight marks, two goals
Round 3 vs North Adelaide - 22 disposals, seven marks
Round 6 vs Central District - 21 disposals, six marks, four tackles, one goal
Round 10 vs Norwood - 26 disposals, seven marks, four tackles
Round 11 vs North Adelaide - 23 disposals, one goal
