Port Adelaide ruck coach, Dean Brogan says while it is important to enjoy last weekend’s Showdown victory, his side’s focus must quickly turn to beating Brisbane in Round 17.
The Power enjoyed its second biggest win over Adelaide, booting the last nine goals to finish 57-point winners.
While victory over the Crows always means more because of the cross-town rivalry, Brogan was adamant that backing up against the Lions was now the focus.
“I think we’ve got to move on pretty quickly,” he said during an interview on SEN SA’s breakfast program on Monday morning.
“I think the message after the game was “Brilliant, we won, enjoy it, but we’ve got to move on pretty quickly because we’re playing a team, Brisbane, who’s just gone down to the Giants stadium and done a number on the Giants.
“We’ve got a massive challenge ahead of us this week so the quicker we can move on and get on with it and concentrate on Brisbane, the better we’ll be.”
Brogan was quick to praise Port’s midfield, with late inclusion Sam Powell-Pepper stepping up to the task after former skipper Travis Boak pulled out with back spasms in the warm-up.
Co-captain Ollie Wines also bounced back from a pressure-filled week leading up to the clash to finish with 34 disposals.
“Our midfield played really well, and like you said, Pep (Sam Powell-Pepper) got the call up pretty much 5 minutes before the boys ran out so for him to just suit up and play, you know probably says a little bit about, you know, preparation,” Brogan said.
“It’s a pretty simple message, “mate you’re playing with two minutes to go” and for him to come out and play like that.
“Obviously Ollie bounced back (and he) had a lot of pressure on him during the week.
“I think from a midfield point of view, I thought the boys kept it pretty simple and you know, put the tricks away and just played really competitive and they were up for the contest, so yeah we were able to get hold of Adelaide in that area.”
The former premiership player for the Power was asked whether he was surprised with the lack of attention on five-time Showdown medallist Robbie Gray, given his dominant performance.
“You look across the comp now, not many teams go in with a mindset of tagging and trying to put someone away,” Brogan said.
“It’s an interesting one, you know, Robbie always pulls one out of the bag when we play the Crows, you know, five-time Showdown medallist, his numbers were outstanding.
“When Boaky went down, he was called upon to play more midfield and he was sensational.”
Brogan said he knows that an in-form Port Adelaide has the potential to contend with the top four if it can maintain consistency in the lead up to the end of the season.
“I think across the year, we’ve had some losses, but we’ve been in a lot of games, we’ve just had quarters or moments that have really cost us.
“I think the minute we can start to find some consistency; I think you know, the top four is not out of reach.
“I was looking at the ladder last night, and we’re a game off top four now and it’s just so tight this year.
“I think anyone is capable this year. Being healthy and playing the right brand of footy towards the end of the season is going to play a big part.”
Brogan said there is confidence growing around the club, but the next question to address is whether the side can back up a big win.
“Look there’s a confidence growing down there (Alberton), the key question is can we bring it every week?” he said.
“I think internally we’re pretty excited about where we’re heading but it’s the old cliché, if we get too far ahead of ourselves, we’ve seen what happens, we can drop a couple and be out of the eight altogether.
“It will be a big game this week against the Lions, I’m sure once we get through that, we’ll reassess about where we’re at.”
The Power goes up against the Brisbane Lions this Sunday at Adelaide Oval with the game commencing at 4.10pm.
