PORT ADELAIDE assistant coach Jarrad Schofield is adamant the Power’s win against the ladder-leading Geelong on Saturday night is proof the side can match it with the best.
Port ran out 11-point winners in front of a raucous crowd at Adelaide Oval, inflicting just the second loss of the season for the Cats.
As much as the win was celebrated, Schofield explained that once the reviews were complete it would be all about focussing on this week’s game against the Western Bulldogs.
“It was a fantastic effort from the boys and everyone involved,” Schofield said at a press conference on Monday afternoon.
“We always say, our best footy is good enough, and we definitely showed that on Saturday night.
“We know we have other challenges ahead, so we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves now, but really enjoy the win because it was a great win for the club.”
The midfield coach says it was an extremely tough week for the match committee at selection, but he believes it shows great depth at Alberton.
“It was a tough week (at selection),” Schofield said.
“Ken obviously had to deliver the message to those players, but I think it shows we have depth within the footy club.
“We want guys at the top of their game, and unfortunately those players that went out weren’t, and other guys came in an fulfilled their roles.
“That’s what we want as coaches - that’s a healthy environment to have. To those boys’ credit who went out, their character really came through, and we expect them to come back into the side at some stage.”
Schofield was also full of praise for key forward Charlie Dixon, who made his return to AFL football against the Cats on the weekend after breaking his leg and damaging his ankle against West Coast in Round 21 last year.
“Talk about energy before the game, it was fantastic,” he said.
“It’s been a long journey for Charlie to get back from last year, and his energy and presence in training and lead up to the game was enormous.
“What he brings on ground - he’s a big, imposing figure - is energy which we all live off. After the game, he got through unscathed. He enjoyed the win and had a real impact.
“Just having his presence there, really straightened us up.”
The Power will be at home again this weekend, when it hosts the Western Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night in Round 15.
