TRAVIS BOAK admits to not knowing much about premiership ruckman Scott Lycett prior to his move to Alberton as a free agent in last year’s trade period.
But the former skipper has heaped an enormous amount of praise on the “super dominant” Lycett since his arrival at Port Adelaide.
“I’ll be honest, I didn’t know too much about him and he was probably second-string over at West Coast with Nic Nat there, but he was definitely highly rated,” Boak told FIVEaa’s Rowey and Bicks.
“Chatting to Paddy, he said he was one of the hardest ruckmen he has rucked against.
“For him to say that and now we’ve got them both in the same side, it’s pretty handy.
“That’s the thing that has stood out the most for us, is his work around the ground.”
The former Eagle had a career-high 25 disposlas (16 contested) and a game-high 33 hit-outs against Carlton in Round 2.
But it is Lycett’s work in the middle of the ground that has the 30-year-old really excited.
“What his asset is, is his centre bounce stuff, which is huge now, it’s a massive advantage,” Boak said.
“For him to be really good in the centre square now gives us a big advantage.
“It’s a great weapon for us to have, and both those guys can go forward and take a mark.”
The inclusion of Lycett in Port Adelaide’s side has allowed Paddy Ryder the opportunity to spend more time in the forward 50.
It's a positional move that Boak believes will provide the Power more attacking options.
“If Paddy takes a mark inside forward 50, he’s a good chance to kick the goal so he’s a fair weapon for us down there,” he said.
“For Scotty to work over a key ruckman like Gawn or whoever he comes up against and then Paddy can come up against a second-stringer or a tired key ruckman, it’s a huge advantage for us.
“We are certainly enjoying those benefits as you can see from the results.”
Port will face Brisbane at the Gabba in Round 3, with the final teams to be announced this evening.
