AHEAD of the 2018 Port Adelaide Football Club Best and Fairest event on October 5, we thought we would profile some of the players who could be in contention to win the coveted A. R. McLean Medal as the best player in the club’s SANFL side.

Jack Trengove only arrived at Alberton at the end of 2017 as a delisted free agent after the former Melbourne co-captain was let go by the Demons.

He played 86 games for the Dees and brought much of that experience to the Magpies side in 2018 in which he was one of the more reliable performers.

His chances of winning the Best and Fairest might be hampered by him missing several games due to playing three in the AFL side and being an AFL emergency on other occasions.

Trengove played 13 SANFL games in 2018, booting eight goals and assisting in seven others.

He was a prolific ball-winner in a young and inexperienced Magpies side and his leadership was crucial at times.

The 27-year-old had 214 kicks at an average of 16.5 per game, a total of 156 handballs for the season and averaged 28.5 disposals per game.

He took 86 marks and averaged 6.2 tackles per game to go with 3.8 clearances per game.

Trengove was the Magpies best against North Adelaide in the final game of the season.

At Prospect Oval he racked up 31 touches, nine marks, and nine tackles to go with two goals as Port fell just short of the Roosters.

He was important in the Round 9 loss to South Adelaide, finishing with 27 disposals, four marks, and a team-high 10 tackles. He also had five inside 50s.

Trengove was one of only a few players who could hold their heads high after a thrashing by North Adelaide in Round 8 when he had a game-high 29 disposals and five marks as he toiled away.

He had 36 touches, nine marks and seven tackles to go with two goals in the ANZAC Day grand final rematch against his former side Sturt and he had 23 touches, seven tackles, and two goals in his club debut against Glenelg in Round 2.
