PORT ADELAIDE skipper Travis Boak was on hand today in Rundle Mall to help Alex Tann live out his childhood dream of becoming a firefighter.
Thousands of people gathered at Beehive Corner in the city to cheer on eight-year-old Alex, as he raced in on one of South Australia’s Metropolitan firetrucks.
Waiting inside a two-storey, simulated burning building were Boak and Adelaide AFLW player Erin Phillips, who were both very thankful that the courageous little boy was there to save the day.
“Alex has had a really rough time, and his dream was to become a fireman,” Boak told portadelaidefc.com.au
“We made that happen today, thanks to Mix FM and the Childhood Cancer Association.
“It was fairly high up, so I’m glad Alex came along with the fire department to help me down.
After rescuing his hero, Alex - a diehard Port Adelaide supporter - was presented with his very own Power guernsey with the number 1, and Alex printed on the back.
Boak said it all came about through his connections with the Childhood Cancer Association, with Mark Soderstrom and Jodie Oddy being the driving forces behind the whole project.
Boak formed a special connection with Alex over the years, after visiting him several times in hospital through his role as ambassador for the Childhood Cancer Association.
“When he had his brain tumour, I visited the hospital every few weeks,” he said.
“It’s amazing when you go in there and you see these kids who just want to fight for their life.
“For me to go in and see Alex, and see him so bubbly, it’s so uplifting.”
