CHANGES in Port Adelaide’s coaching department can be a win-win for all parties, according to the club’s general manager – football, Chris Davies.
The club has extended the tenures of Michael Voss and Chad Cornes but will part ways with senior assistant Matthew Nicks and development coach Aaron Greaves at season’s end.
Voss joined Port Adelaide in 2015 as midfield coach and has extended his contract for a further two years.
Cornes, who enjoyed a decorated playing career at the Power and coached the Magpies in the SANFL in 2016 and 2017, will continue in his development role.
Nicks reached a mutual decision with Port Adelaide to pursue other opportunities at the end of the club’s 2018 campaign, while Greaves has made the decision to head back to his home state of Victoria.
Both moves have been endorsed by Davies, who said he wished both men well.
"Matthew is looking to increase the breadth of his experience at another club and at the same time, we are mindful of the importance of introducing new coaches into our own program to generate new ideas and coaching philosophies," he said during a press conference on Monday.
"Aaron is committed to his family returning to Victoria.
"Both Matthew and Aaron are contracted to Port Adelaide until the end of October and have invested a lot
"They are fully committed to continuing to the end of our 2018 campaign."
Nicks joined Port Adelaide in 2011, spending two years as development coach before becoming an assistant coach in 2013.
He has spent the last two seasons’ as senior assistant to coach Ken Hinkley.
Greaves is currently Port Adelaide’s head of football development - a position he has held for the past two seasons.
He joined Port Adelaide in 2014 as midfield development and ruck coach in 2014.
Davies said he had no doubt both men would coach against the Power at some stage, but he expected them to see out their contracts, continuing to uphold the professional standards they had maintained throughout their time at the club.
"We believe both people are of sufficient character that they can continue to do their job and focus on our football club before they turn their attention to wherever they go next," Davies said.
“There are plenty of players across the competition who know they won't be playing for their clubs next year.
"We have been through a process recently where people get castigated for making decisions early.
"I'm not sure that's the right way to go and I'm very comfortable with both Matthew and Aaron doing their jobs for the remainder of this year.
"At the end of the year, we'll look at what our coaching panel looks like and what roles people will be doing."
Davies said the club would soon start considering the make-up of its coaching panel for 2019 and beyond.
