PREPARE to see the fast, exciting brand of football Port Adelaide's become known for at the inaugural AFLX competition next Thursday.

According to Senior Assistant Coach Matthew Nicks, the playing group is excited about the punchy, free-flowing style of game the AFLX format offers.

“The players have a lot more space on the ground, which allows for fast movement of the footy,” Nicks said.

“It shows the skill, it shows the speed of our players and shows the ability of the boys to run constantly.

“The structure of the game is actually very similar to what we train for in pre-season anyway – it’s really exciting.”

Some of the rule changes that will be applied during the AFLX are; last touch out of bounds, play-on for backwards kicks outside of the forward 40, 10-point super goal from outside 40m, and kick-in from every scoring play.

While the rules may seem a little foreign to some AFL supporters, Nicks doesn’t believe the rules will be too hard to adjust to.

“The major difference for us will be the kick-in from any scoring play,” he said.

“It just allows the game to be a little more continuous, which adds to the excitement.

“What you get from this game is limited stoppages, which will allow for free-flowing play.

“The fact that the game will be so open means we will see a lot more skills on show from individuals, with so much space.”

Port Adelaide will play Geelong in the first-ever AFLX match at Coopers Stadium on Thursday, February 15, followed by a clash with Fremantle later in the evening.

Adelaide, West Coast, and Collingwood will play on the other side of the draw, with the top side of each pool playing in a Grand Final.
