Lobbe signs two-year extension with Port Adelaide
Port Adelaide is pleased to confirm ruckman Matthew Lobbe has extended his contract with the club.
Lobbe, 24, has played 39 games for the club since debuting in Round 5, 2010.
The 200cm Lobbe has played in 17 games for the Power so far this year including each of the club’s 12 wins, while maintaining sole ruck duties since Round 12.
His last five games have been particularly impressive, with Lobbe having set the third-highest number of hit outs in a VFL/AFL match when the Power played Geelong at Simonds Stadium in Round 20.
Port Adelaide’s senior coach Ken Hinkley welcomed Lobbe’s contract extension on the back of an outstanding 2013 campaign with the club.
“He’s at that age where ruckmen tend to develop best and ‘Lobbes’ has stayed true to the model,” Hinkley said.
“He’s had an outstanding season for us this year despite having to shoulder a lot of the ruck on his own.
“He’s been very good playing his position but also in terms of his voice and leadership around the ground as well - he’s shown great maturity.
“He’s only going to improve more and more as we go along our journey here at Port Adelaide.”
Hinkley praised the leadership Lobbe has offered around the Port Adelaide playing group in 2013.
Despite Lobbe playing just 39 games, Hinkley believes he will be a key member of the club’s future on-field leadership.
“One of the real key ingredients with ‘Lobbes’ around this group is his ability to bring honesty and leadership,” said Hinkley.
“He has a real presence around the group - our boys want to listen to him and follow his lead.
“Even though he hasn’t played lots of footy, he hasn’t let that stop him from being a really influential leader around the football club and we think he’s going to fill a role in our leadership group at some stage in the future.”
Lobbe is excited about the next chapter in his football career at Port Adelaide and is looking forward to the future as part of the club’s young and developing list.
“I’m excited to be with the club for another two years, we’ve made some great steps forward this year under Kenny and the other coaches,” said Lobbe.
Lobbe says training under two-time premiership ruckman Shaun Rehn and as part of a dynamic midfield group has enabled him to take the next step as an AFL ruckman.
“It’s been great working with Rehny and a really dedicated midfield at the club - I’ve learned a lot from that experience.
“The whole playing group has knuckled down and worked hard and I’m looking forward to the exciting future with a group of guys who are competitive, really want to get better and want to win.
“I love being here at Port Adelaide.”
