CHARLIE Dixon's presence inside Port Adelaide's forward 50 is having a huge impact on the team's youngsters, Dan Houston says.

The young defender told AFL.com.au that the big-marking bearded forward was a big factor in the team's ability to perform well in big games despite having a relatively inexperienced line up.

"He's massive. He's a huge influence on us," Houston said.

"His presence is really crucial to lift us."

The 26-year-old Dixon kicked two vital goals in the final quarter against the Western Bulldogs to finish with four for the game.

He has now kicked 42 for the season, passing his previous best of 41 goals in a season in 2015 when at the Gold Coast.

"He has played some great games for this footy club. That was a big game and a big day and a big moment but Charlie has been amazing for us, not just today but he has been really good all year," coach Ken Hinkley said.

Houston said the team's leaders were critical at this stage of the season.

"It was a crucial game," Houston said.

"For our leaders to stand up and play well is what we need us young players to build confidence."

Houston showed courage to play out the game after hurting his shoulder when tackled in the first quarter with Hinkley describing it as "a big hit".

"I had to simplify my game a bit more so I didn't put myself at risk too much," Houston said.

Houston said he is confident Port Adelaide can perform well in finals.

"If we can get the game on our terms and play some really fast footy we can challenge a lot of teams," Houston said.
