PORT Adelaide players and coaches travelled to the Riverland and Broken Hill this week to deliver the club’s community programs as part of the Australia Post AFL community camp.

35 players visited dozens of schools, nursing homes and hospitals in the Riverland alone, reaching over ten thousand people across towns including Waikerie, Berri, Barmera, Moorook, Cogdobla, Swan Reach, Loxton and many more.

Eight players also visited Broken Hill as part of the camp.

The Riverland visit culminated in a super clinic at Berri Football Club on Monday afternoon, with hundreds of children turning out to have a kick of the footy and grab a photo with their favourite Port Adelaide players.

Various clinic sessions were held including tackling, goal kicking and marking as well as specialised coaching sessions for young girls, West Adelaide talent squad players and Aboriginal Power Cup participants.

Power forward Aaron Young told portadelaidefc.com.au it was fantastic to get back up to South Australia’s Riverland region this year.

“It’s a really good opportunity for us to connect with the Riverland area…obviously they don’t get as many opportunities to meet the players, so it’s fantastic for us to get out here and meet some of our regional supporters,” he said.

“In our school visits, we’ve been up here in various groups talking about healthy lifestyles – what to eat, how much water to drink, exercise and those kinds of important messages.

“It’s a beautiful day, there are plenty of kids around for the Auskick clinic – it’s really great to see so many kids out here interested in footy.”

The evening is set to see Berri Football Club host a fundraising dinner with the Port Adelaide players, coaches and staff, with on-stage interviews from Ken Hinkley and some key players.

Port Adelaide’s senior youth programs manager Jake Battifuoco said club legend and Riverland local Russell Ebert was also a massive hit with the local community during the visits.

“Russell is in high demand today,” he said.

“He’s had quite a number of functions and he’s also the star of tonight’s community dinner at Berri Football club, so the locals are very much looking forward for Russ to return!”

Port Adelaide’s community camp will continue on Tuesday.
