PORT ADELAIDE stars Robbie Gray and Tom Jonas have teamed up with their businesses to help raise money and awareness for men’s health.
Gray and Jonas will both be growing a moustache in the month of November in conjunction with the Movember Foundation to raise much needed funds and awareness for the cause.
“We are here today to launch The Fellow Barber Movember campaign,” Gray told reporters at his barber shop in Norwood.
“We are going to get a shave down. TJ (Tom Jonas) and the Hey Diddle Wine boys are on board as well.
“We will start with a clean shave and try to raise some money across the month of November in store here and we will set up an online MoSpace page, where people can go on and donate.
“It’s something that is pretty close to me, and a great cause, so I’m looking forward to getting involved.”
In 2017, the four-time All-Australian was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and he said “Movember” was a great opportunity for him to raise awareness in a bid to help other males going through similar circumstances.
“A lot of people have reached out over the last couple of years,” Gray said.
“It’s the most common type of cancer for young men. Any awareness we can try to promote is great.
“It’s not only the cancer stuff Movember promote, it’s mental health and suicide prevention.
“We want to try and help other guys out there by spreading a bit of awareness, and raise some money at the same time.”
The mercurial forward said he hoped the money raised through the charity will help save lives.
“So much goes into research and treatments, and finding better ways to do things,” he said.
“Ultimately we want to save lives and that’s what we are trying to do. It’s a fantastic cause to be involved in, and have a little fun along the way.
“We will see what the mo looks like at the end of the month.”
Port Adelaide co-captain Tom Jonas was also quick to assist in any way he could for the great cause.
“Mental health is more relevant now than it ever has,” Jonas said.
“Although I haven’t been personally affected by it, we see people around us that have – whether that be cancer, depression or a number of things.
“I wanted to do my bit, and so did Brad (Ebert) and Ben from the Hey Diddle Wines boys, and just try to help out.
“We’ve seen Robbie go through it and it’s great for him to get on board and really lead the charge, given his story.
“We are just trying to make any little difference we can.”
Jonas’ company Hey Diddle Wines has made a limited edition wine, with $5 of every bottle sold being donated to the Movember Foundation.
“Besides trying to grow a mo – which won’t be very successful – we have just done a limited release Sangiovese,” he said.
“If you’re a red drinker, you can jump online and buy some of that knowing it will go to help out others.
“We also have a donation page, so whether you’re donating to Robbie, myself or one of the many other men out there growing a mo – you know it’s going to a good cause.”
