WHEN your history is as rich and as proud as that of the Port Adelaide Football Club, how do you share it with as many people as possible?
That is the challenge being met by the club ahead of its 150th anniversary year in 2020.
With a feature-length documentary about its enviable journey to be released in 2020 along with an Iconic Treasures commemorative collector’s book, the club identified a need to also better document the club’s history in an increasingly online world.
A new website, Since1870.com.au outlines 150 years of history in an easy to read and easy to navigate way, that will appeal to supporters and non-supporters alike.
With an AFL premiership, 36 SANFL premierships, four Champions of Australia titles and countless heroes on and off the field, there is a lot to highlight.
“The Port Adelaide Football Club has an amazing story, and until now we’ve not been able to capture that in a concise, digital format that is simple for people to navigate,” said Executive General Manager, Matthew Richardson.
“The Port Adelaide Football Club is 150 years old in 2020, and it’s a pretty amazing journey. The Since 1870 website is a fantastic summary of that story, with some amazing images, quotes and storylines.
“Storytelling is critical to a club with our depth of history. Port Adelaide’s is a story that must be celebrated and preserved for future generations and our responsibility as the current custodians of the club is to ensure this is captured, nurtured and told in such a way that it does justice to the amazing stories of the Port Adelaide Football Club.
“Since 1870 is just one way we’ll share our story in such a significant year for our club.”
Broken down into eras, the website tells the story of the club, from its humble beginning after a meeting of local community leaders in the heart of Port Adelaide to celebrating the ultimate success – the 2004 AFL Premiership.
The site tells of the “Invincibles” who went undefeated in 1914 on their way to becoming the Champions of Australia, the “Golden Generation” which won a national record six premierships in-a-row in the 1950s to set an Australian record, the club’s push for AFL entry and its move to make China a second home.
Put together in partnership with creative agency Chello, Since 1870, was launched today after more than 12 months in production.
