PORT Adelaide has named a young side to take on Melbourne in Renmark on Sunday afternoon.

Included in the names rested from the Power’s squad that played a fortnight ago is Travis Boak, Brad Ebert, Alipate Carlile, Kane Cornes, Brett Ebert, Angus Monfries (through injury), Jasper Pittard, Jay Schulz and Justin Westhoff.

Jackson Trengove will lead the side in the absence of captain Boak and deputy Brad Ebert. Hamish Hartlett is the only other member of the club's leadership group named in the side.

Danny Butcher, Justin Hoskin and Brendon Ah Chee have been named as emergencies, but will play in an internal trial for the club's SANFL side on Friday afternoon.

Matthew Lobbe is the only player to be named from the club's injury list, with Dom Cassisi and Cameron Hitchcock to again be rested.

The Power and Demons will play with 24-man squads including three bench players and three substitutes.

With forecasted conditions of 32 degrees in Renmark and reduced-length quarters, it seems unlikely that the three substitutes will be changed to extended bench players as per a recent AFL announcement.

Senior coach Ken Hinkley said prior to the club’s final training session the young squad would provide the coaches an opportunity to better assess a number of players.

“We have a pretty good handle on our more senior players and what they’re able to do so we’ll take a few less of them this week and take up a few more boys that we need to see,” said Hinkley.

“Some of the boys who have played a bit of AFL football we have a really good understanding [of them].

“There’s still opportunities with training and with games for any of those (younger) players to come up and say ‘I need to be picked and you’ve got to look at me.”
