Meet Sam Willoughby. He’s a Year 12 Student at Heathfield High who has completed a valuable week of work experience at the Port Adelaide Football Club as a member of Empowering Youth – Power Community Ltd’s youth engagement program.
It was a tour of the Allan Scott Headquarters at Alberton with his school last year that sparked Sam’s interest in employment opportunities at the Power and its involvement in the community.
He also participated in an Empowering Youth leadership day at the Adelaide Oval.
As a result of Sam's experience, he made contact with Power Community Ltd at the end of 2015 to organise a week of work experience.
During this time, Sam took part in a modified Empowering Youth module for regional schools.
This allowed him to learn about careers in football, be shown around the training facilities and immerse himself in the club’s history.
Lisa Kennedy, Power Community Ltd’s youth programs officer commended Sam for his initiative.
“Sam was eager to learn and take on any tasks thrown at him and this was again showcased during his week of work experience with us, where he welcomed every task as an opportunity to try something new,” she said.
“He also went above and beyond to volunteer his time on the weekend to help us with our game day activations and proved to be an amazing help.”
Sam said his week at Port Adelaide Football Club was one he will never forget.
“I learned about not only how hard working the football department is, but also every other department that makes the club what it is today,” Sam said.
“Work experience with Port Adelaide has helped me build confidence by interacting and meeting new people around the club. I faced new experiences that were out of my comfort zone, but helped me to be more open and approachable."
