Rnd 20 SANFL wrap-up
MITCH Farmer’s move to South Adelaide is starting to reap the rewards, with the feisty defender showing speed and toughness rebounding from the Panthers’ backli
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Darren Trevena and Stuart Cochrane, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
It was a busy weekend in the SANFL for Power players, with 17 players in action. The full wrap is below.
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Mitch Farmer (for South v Eagles @ Thebarton) – An impressive game from Mitch, showing some of the speed we saw from him last year, rebounding from defence. He had 13 kicks, 6 handballs, 2 marks and 5 tackles. He worked up the ground to go inside 50 and give his teammates some scoring opportunities. He’s starting to find a nice mixture of defence and attack in his game and he’s slowly improving each week since moving to South.
Matthew Broadbent (for Eagles v South @ Thebarton) – Broady’s first game for 3 weeks (emergency for two and the SANFL bye) and he showed an excellent work rate, playing tough and hard footy. Finished with 19 possessions, 3 marks and 6 tackles. He needed the run to get back on track to have a big contribution in the Eagles’ finals campaign.
Nick Salter (for Eagles v South @ Thebarton) – Salts played deep forward and was again in the goals, booting 5.1. He led up the ground well and took some nice contested marks. He showed some strong form and he’ll be hoping for AFL selection this week.
Daniel Stewart (for North v Central @ Prospect) – Stewie had 8 kicks, 4 marks and 3 tackles working hard in the forward line in a losing team. Came up as the second ruck but tired a bit as the game went on with the heavy workload. Still looked confident in the marking contest but needs to follow up a bit more at ground level.
Wade Thompson (for North v Central @ Prospect) – Wade again showed some good speed running with the ball, but just needs to do it more often. He missed a few chances at goal but applied some good defensive pressure. 5 kicks, 2 marks and 1.2.
Matt Lobbe (for West v Sturt @ Unley) – Not as much of an impact this week around the ground but still rucked well against some good opposition. He followed up well at stoppages again with 6 tackles to go with his 26 hitouts.
Michael Pettigrew (for West v Sturt @ Unley) – Back from injury, Michael had a tough day against a rampaging Sturt side who were looking for Chambers at every opportunity. He had 6 goals kicked on him but actually beat Chambers in the one-on-one contests. With the huge number of inside 50s for Sturt, he was always going to have his work cut out. Still a solid game.
Toby Thurstans (for Sturt v West @ Unley) – Toby played down back and defended well, despite the ball not coming into West’s forward line all that often. He did some nice rebound work and used the ball well by foot. Finished with 5 kicks, 2 marks, 8 handballs and 7 handball receives.
Jackson Trengove (for Port v Norwood @ Alberton) – Jacko was probably beaten in the first half but bounced back in the second half with some good competitive marks. He used the ball well by foot finishing with 13 possessions and 9 marks.
Nick Lower (for Norwood v Port @ Alberton) – Nick had another good game, but probably wasn’t up to the lofty standard he’s set for himself in the past. He’s got a slight niggling injury which is restricting his game, but he still managed to have 20 possesions and 7 tackles.
Mitch Banner (for Eagles reserves v South reserves @ Thebarton) – A very good game from Mitch racking up a heap of the ball with 29 possessions and 10 marks and getting forward from the midfield to kick 4.1. His work at stoppages was impressive and used the ball very well. He’s a very good player at that level, but he’ll need to start doing that at league level.
Jarrad Redden (for Eagles reserves v South reserves @ Thebarton) – Jarrad gave his midfielders first use of the footy around the stoppages with 22 hitouts but just needs to work on his positioning around the ground.
Glenn Dawson (for Eagles reserves v South reserves @ Thebarton) – Not a big day for the Cougar with just 4 kicks and 3 marks, but he has improved since the start of the year. He’s starting to look a little bit tired as a result of the intensity of training at an AFL club but he’s still trying hard.
Jonathan Giles (for Central reserves v North reserves @ Prospect) – Joffa played ruck and a bit at full forward after being dropped back down to the reserves (with Griffin returning to the league side) He won the ruck in a good contest and tackled and followed up at the stoppages. He got to good positions behind the ball and provided a good target. Finished with 6 kicks, 7 marks, 10 handballs, 1.2, 8 tackles and 30 hitouts.
Matthew Westhoff (for Central reserves v North reserves @ Prospect) – Westy didn’t have a great day playing full forward and half forward. He took a knock early in the game which restricted his movement and affected the way he played. He tried hard defensively but struggled to get involved in an attacking sense.
Matthew Martin (for West reserves v Port reserves @ Richmond) – Matty got to a number of marking contests but still probably needs to get to more. Had some nice kicks, both around the ground and at goal, with a highlight being a goal kicked from inside the centre square from 65 metres out that sailed through post height.
Jesse Laurie (for West reserves v Port reserves @ Richmond) – A good game from Jesse, finishing with 16 kicks, 12 handballs, 9 marks, 8 tackles, 6 clearances and 2 goals. He played a bit more on the ball than he has in the past and it was good to see him in there working hard, applying pressure at the stoppages.
