AHEAD of their meeting in Round 12 of the 2018 AFL Premiership Season, we thought we would look back at one of our favourite clashes between Port Adelaide and Richmond.
Both sides had entered the 2014 finals series full of hope. Port Adelaide had surprised many with its high-tempo attacking brand of football, winning 14 games and just missing out on the top four. Richmond had secured back-to-back finals appearances for the first time since the 70s and remarkably did so having only won three of its first 13 matches.
The Tigers came into the game at Adelaide Oval with seemingly unstoppable momentum but they were met head on by a Port Adelaide side that soon ended any thought of a fairytale Richmond premiership.
Wearing a replica Port Adelaide Magpies prison-bar guernsey, the Power set the agenda from the outset with Justin Westhoff booting the first goal of the day inside 90 seconds.
Kicking with the breeze thanks to Richmond skipper Trent Cotchin electing to kick against it, Port kicked the first seven goals, keeping the Tigers scoreless until late in an awe-inspiring opening quarter.
Travis Boak was unstoppable with ten touches and a goal in the first term.
Facing a seven-goal deficit at the first break, Richmond tried to fight back but Port Adelaide had the answers and responded with another six goals to two in the second term.
The Tigers’ nine-game winning streak was all but over by the main break as the Power continued on its merry way with its ferocious attack on the contest.
Boak finished with 34 touches while Robbie Gray (25 touches, one goal), Ollie Wines (24 disposals, two goals) and Chad Wingard (22 disposals, two goals) were also brilliant as the Power set up a semi-final against Fremantle in Perth.
