MATCH-worn guernseys from Port Adelaide’s SANFL Indigenous Round match against Norwood will be available for purchase through an online auction.
The Magpies will wear the special guernsey this Saturday as part of the league’s annual Indigenous round.
Starting on Thursday evening at portstore.com.au, the auction will run until 5pm, Thursday 16 July.
The guernsey has been designed by local artist Shane Cook and tells the story of how the Le Fevre Peninsula was formed.
“Port Adelaide is known as Yartapuulti to the Kaurna Miyurna of the Adelaide Plains,” Cook said.
“The Le Fevre was created as an emu catching ground – once an emu is herded into the peninsula, it had only one way to back out, where a man would be waiting with a big net known as ‘Manta’.
“The tracks of the emu on the guernsey represent the Le Fevre Peninsula was created as an Emu catching-ground by the ancestors of the Kaurna Miyurna.
“The waterhole represents the fresh water spring created by the ancestor Tjilbruke as he mounred his nephew’s death on the peninsula.
“The hatches on the back represent the nets – Manta – the favourite way of catching emus by the Kaurna Miyurna.”
Aunty Barb Wingard designed Port Adelaide's AFL Indigenous Round guernsey worn earlier in the year.
