OLLIE WINES will miss a month of football with a wrist injury suffered against North Melbourne, it has been confirmed.
However in a positive outcome for Port Adelaide, the 20-year-old will not require surgery.
Wines dislocated his wrist in an innocuous incident with North’s Andrew Swallow that forced him into the red substitute’s vest early in the fourth quarter of Saturday night’s eight-point win.
While scans have cleared Wines of the need for surgery, he will still need to complete a minimum of four weeks of rehabilitation, according to head of high performance Darren Burgess.
“He had a dislocation of a small bone in his wrist reversed by a surgeon in Adelaide on Sunday,” Burgess told portadelaidefc.com.au.
“It was reviewed today and there’s no need for surgery.
“Initially, he’ll need to keep the arm pretty still, but we expect him to be running after about three weeks, so his conditioning won’t be an issue.
“As with everything we’ll only put him back out when he’s ready to go, he’s a pretty combative player so we need to make sure he’s A-OK.”
Matt White will be assessed at training this week after rolling his ankle against North Melbourne.
Burgess says he’s touch-and-go for Saturday’s game against the Hawks.
“We need to see how Whitey goes at training during the week but we don’t want to risk players by bringing them back too early, as we’ve done by holding Lobbes over too,” Burgess said.
Lobbe will undergo a fitness test at training again after missing the first three rounds of the season.
Ensuring he’s fully fit to return from his quad injury remains the club’s priority.
“Lobbe is an important player for us, and Kenny is on record saying he doesn’t want him back until he’s passed fit,” Burgess said.
“It’s all about how he responds during training, which is why he’s a week-to-week proposition.”
Mason Shaw is a strong chance to play in Port Adelaide’s SANFL game against Norwood on Friday night after spending over a month in rehab for a groin injury.
If selected, he’ll be a valuable target for the Magpies up forward.
Billy Frampton and Dougal Howard are still around a month away from returning.
