NATHAN Krakouer has won the third annual John McCarthy Award for his selfless contribution to the community.
Named for the late Power midfielder John McCarthy in honour of his work in the community during his sole year at Alberton, the award recognises a player who contributes to the community external of his obligations within the club.
Joining the Port Adelaide AFL list for the first time since 2010, Krakouer was recognised for his work with Aboriginal youth since re-joining the club full-time.
Upon his arrival, Krakouer sought opportunities to act as a role model and mentor for local indigenous youth groups and also volunteered his time to work in community and participatory programs aimed at having a positive impact on local children.
Krakouer also works within Power Community Ltd's Aboriginal programs framework, including as a mentor to players in the club's Aboriginal AFL Academy, which is jointly run with the South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy.
Previous winners of the John McCarthy Medal include Jack Hombsch and Brad Ebert.
