QUEENSLAND'S Sunshine Coast is the scene for Port Adelaide’s pre-season camp in 2019 and in the first post in a daily camp diary, rookie Trent Burgoyne provides an insight into the first day at Lake Kawana.

We all met at the airport in the morning and flew across to Brisbane. It was pretty busy when we got off the plane to get our bags but we made our way to our little busses to drive just over an hour up to our accommodation at Lake Kawana.

In my bus there was myself, Marty Frederick, Trav (Boak), Rocky (Tom Rockliff), Robbie (Gray), Jordan Hinkley and Paul Stewart, so it was an interesting group but we had some fun. We listened to some music on the local Nova station. Rocky knew the radio stations up here because of his time in Queensland. I cracked a few jokes with the boys but some were a bit tired so they stayed pretty quiet.

We got to the accommodation and it’s a nice set-up. I thought I was going to have a room to myself but when I got my key card, I found out the first-year boys are sharing so we’ve got bunk beds and everybody else has their own room. I’m with Jake Pasini. He’s pretty good to get along with but I’m hoping he doesn’t snore.

We dropped our gear and got changed and walked down to the rugby league oval, which is basically next door, for training. It was a pretty full on running session – my first with an AFL team. It was hard but I got through it. I love doing that kind of stuff so I pushed as hard as I could.

They put me in the fast group. I didn’t really notice that at the start but when I was dropping off a little bit I realised and pushed myself to keep up with them. It was pretty hot and humid but it was good to run through that.

We came back and had a nice feed all together and then we had a bit of a team bonding session and a talk from Hugh Van Cuylenburg from the Resilience Project. He’s really interesting.

The coaches aren’t telling us til late what’s planned for each day so we’re a bit in the dark and I’m not sure what to expect on day two.
