Day five of Port Adelaide’s pre-season camp on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast was another filled with running, gym work and stiflingly hot conditions.
Here rookie Trent Burgoyne provides an insight into the day at Lake Kawana and Maroochydore.
We did our rotations in the morning so for me that was running, gym and break. During the running session I was doing some conditioning so I was on the bike a fair bit. There were nine of us in there and that went for about 35 minutes but it was short so it was a good session.
We did more leg stuff in the gym and some of the other boys were doing some pretty heavy work.
I then had my break so I had my shin looked at. It was a bit sore so I’ve been off legs but I’ll be training fully again tomorrow.
After lunch there was a team meeting on transitioning and how the team works in offensive and defensive transitioning. It was pretty good to get the terminology and an understanding of how the team plays in different areas.
Most of the team went to training at Maroochydore but I stayed back with the rehab boys and did some upper body conditioning with Todd Marshall. I did some ropes, rowing, medicine ball and boxing work for about an hour. I’m not massive yet but I’m getting there! They haven’t set a goal for me on how much weight I need to add but I’m about 72 kilos right now and I’d like to be around 75 or 76 and put on a lot of muscle.
After that we came down to watch the boys train and do a bit of touch. It was pretty hot out there but I am always pumped for training and don’t like missing anything. I still got involved so I was asking questions to Vossy, Lokes and some of the players who were coming off the ground during drills so when I am back in there, I’m not missing anything.
I was surprised at how many supporters were at training. There are probably a lot more supporters up here but I didn’t realise there would be such a good turn-out for our training.
I had a few photos and requests for autographs which is a bit strange because you think a month ago I wasn’t getting any of that. It’s really nice, especially with these fans on the Sunshine Coast that we don’t see much.
Tonight the coaches are putting on a bit of a barbecue as another little get together with all the players, coaches and staff and we’ll do some team-building activities after that with some fun thrown in.
