PORT ADELAIDE youngster Kane Farrell spoke to Adelaide radio Sportsday SA about the club’s pre-season and preparations for season 2020.
Here are the key takeaways from the interview:
Farrell his own preparations for the year:
“I’ve had a little taste of AFL footy.
“This pre-season I have knuckled down a little bit more than previous ones. I’ve got a bit more mature in the body.
“This year, I’m looking forward to hopefully a big year.
Farrell on playing on the wing and a potential midfield spot:
“I prefer it on the wing at the moment.
“You get a bit more of the footy than you do down forward. I like kicking the ball into the forwards. I want to try and create more plays for us.
“If I get chucked in there one game to help out with rotations for the other inside mids, I think I would be able to do that to give them a helping hand.
“It’s about making sure I have different options when I’m out there playing.
Farrell on his specific focusses during training:
“I’m focussing on my contest work - being stronger over the ball.
“I want to be cleaner in traffic and just all-round stronger in my tackling and when being tackled.
“I’m working on my contest and general inside craft.
Farrell on Charlie Dixon’s pre-season:
“He has trained very well at the moment.
“He’s marking everything that comes his way. He’s kicking goals. And he’s just creating a big contest for all of the small forwards around him.
“His pre-season so far has been very good.
Farrell on Jackson Mead’s training:
“Jackson Mead has been standing out pretty well at training.
“His body shape and his skills around the contest - he’s pretty ready-made.
“He’s definitely put his best foot forward to start off his AFL journey.
Farrell on the club’s focus throughout pre-season:
“We’ve been focussing on adapting to different game styles.
“How different teams play - what sort of game plays they throw at us, and just adapting to that quicker than we have in the past.
“Then, it’s about knowing when we start playing our style of footy and start attacking more.
Farrell on the coaching structure during training:
“Kenny usually gets around to all of the drills.
“He’s always out there instructing all the players about what we need to be doing.
“Michael Voss is right up there with Kenny - always out there instructing players. They can give you a little spray every now and then.
“The line coaches then help out their specific spots.
Farrell on who has mentored him during his time at Alberton:
“Trav Boak has been good to me, even in my first two years.
“This year he is helping me with my work-rate stuff. Getting fitter and stronger.
“My mentors this year are Jack Watts and Justin Westhoff. I want to just learn from them - knowledge of the game.
“That’s what I’m trying to get out of them really.
Farrell on Jack Watts’ return to full training:
“He’s working back into it now.
“He’s looking really good at the moment and hopefully he can get back out there this season.
