PORT ADELAIDE started its pre-season campaign on a winning note, defeating Brisbane by 21 points at Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex in Burpengary.

The Power trailed the Lions by one point at the first change but led at every other break, with a five-goal third term setting up the Marsh Community Series victory.

Here are some of the talking points from Port’s win on the road:

Motlop and Dixon impressing after strong pre-seasons:

Steven Motlop was arguably Port’s best on Sunday afternoon, booting three goals from his 22 disposals with his creativity in the front half of the ground a real weapon.

Motlop kicked two goals late in the third quarter and the opening major of the final quarter to break the game wide open and hand the Power a 30-point advantage.

Charlie Dixon backed up his four-goal haul in the club’s internal trial with another four majors against Brisbane in Queensland.

The key forward opened the scoring, and continued to be a real presence in Port Adelaide’s forward 50, finishing with 18 touches, five tackles and three marks to go with his four goals.

Powell-Pepper’s manic pressure:

It has been made public already this year that Sam Powell-Pepper would play a forward role in season 2020 and that was on show against the Lions.

Powell-Pepper’s tackling pressure in Port’s forward half of the ground was a real highlight, with that pressure directly resulting in a number of goals.

The 22-year-old finished with 23 touches, seven tackles and seven score involvements.

Same old Boak:

Travis Boak was once again influential in the middle of the ground, racking up a team-high 33 disposals on Sunday afternoon.

Boak found plenty of the ball at the coalface, collecting 11 clearances - one fewer than Brisbane ball-magnet Lachie Neale - and regularly dishing out to the Power’s outside runners.

The former skipper had a game-high eight score involvements and a team-high six inside 50s in his side’s 21-point win.

Ladhams up against one of the league’s premier ruckmen:

Peter Ladhams has played five AFL games compared to Stefan Martin’s 182, but the Power big man was impressive against the veteran Lion.

Ladhams had 17 touches and 26 hit-outs, while Martin had 21 and 37 respectively in a good battle between the two.

The Power won the clearance battle 50-45 and had 18 more inside 50s.

Port Adelaide will now turn its attention to the under-23 trial game against Adelaide at Thebarton Oval on Saturday, before travelling to Whyalla to host the Western Bulldogs in the final fixture of the Marsh Community Series the following weekend.
