Greg Anderson won two premierships and a Magarey Medal during a decorated career with Port Adelaide, but it all started with a tap on the shoulder from Russell Ebert.

IN the newest edition of MG Moments, Port Adelaide legend Greg Anderson recalls the star struck moment he received the news he would be making his senior debut for the club.

“I’ll never forget the day that Russell (Ebert) came up to me on a Thursday night – I’d only played two reserves games,” Anderson remembered.

“He said, ‘We are going to play you this week.’”

Anderson was a fresh-faced 17-year-old and that week’s opponent was a strong Sturt side that would feature in the last game of the season against West that year.

“I really wasn’t sure if he was going to say, ‘In the reserves’,” Anderson admitted.

“He must have seen in my expression and he said ‘Greg, no, we are going to play you league this week.”

Anderson would go on to enjoy a decorated career, winning two premierships with Port Adelaide, a Magarey Medal and find himself inducted into South Australian Football Hall of Fame.

However, that moment in the changerooms with Russell Ebert is a lasting one that has stuck with Anderson all these years later thanks to his love of the club.

“It was like he said it yesterday and it’s 30-odd years later – it is something you never forget,” he said.

“It is because of my passion, and my family’s passion, by being part of the Port Adelaide community from the word go.”
