AS the media talks up expectations about Port Adelaide’s season, coach Ken Hinkley is keeping a lid on things.
Port has a challenging start to the year, facing Sydney and Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval and Fremantle and North Melbourne away, but it could be a blessing in disguise forcing Hinkley’s men to put their heads down early in the year.
With betting companies placing Port as third favourite for the flag, Hinkley is reminding his players that if they don’t work hard, they won’t get anywhere.
“I’ve been around forever and you know that if you take your eye off the ball the game eats you up and there’s a side ready to take your spot, and that’s why you’ve got to be prepared to work,“ Hinkley said.
Speaking on SEN, Hinkley recalled when he first came to the club at the end of 2012, and given its turn around in only a few years, thinks they can act as a motivation for a number of clubs in the competition.
“When I walked in the door, Keith (Thomas) was only just new, Kochie (David Koch) was new, and the playing group were quite young still.
“There was a fair bit of doom and gloom around Port, and to the credit of our leaders of the club, they’ve certainly directed us in the right way.
With Round 1 approaching Port will be hoping to continue its on field turn around, buoyed by the addition of Paddy Ryder in the off-season.
Ahead of the club’s match simulation training on Friday, Hinkley said he was excited by the versatility and experience Ryder brings to the team.
“Matthew Lobbe has done basically two years on his own in the ruck, so it’s a significant help for him, and for us it’s what we’ve looked for in our forward half.
“I’ve seen Paddy play centre half back, full forward, in the ruck, so he’s got some capabilities that say he can play all over the ground. “
The clubs new recruits also extend to the coaches box, with 3 time premiership captain Michael Voss joining Port as midfield manager.
“In my time I think he goes down as good a captain as there was and obviously his record is sensational, but for the boys he still has a presence.
“He will bring a fair bit of physical intimidation to our team and that’s one thing that we look forward to with Michael.”
