Port Adelaide members and supporters seized the “opportunity” to help End Hunger by donating to a unique fundraiser during the club’s Round 10 clash with Carlton.
The crowd at AAMI Stadium embraced the Can of Opportunity initiative launched by the club and its joint major partner Foodbank through their Power to End Hunger campaign.
Spectators put more than $7000 into collection tins, turning empty cans of Opportunity into something very meaningful in Foodbank’s efforts to provide food to hungry South Australians.
In addition, a guest at the club chairman’s Before the Bounce function donated $2000 for the honour of tossing the coin on AAMI Stadium at the start of the game.
Port Adelaide chief executive officer Keith Thomas thanked everyone for their donation.
“We used the Round 10 game as a celebration of the Power to End Hunger partnership and we are proud of our members and supporters in particular for contributing to the cause,” Thomas said.
“From the moment we put the End Hunger message on our players’ guernseys, the Port Adelaide community wanted to do its bit to help.”
The money - counted by the Power to End Hunger principal partner, Bendigo Bank - will go a long way, with Foodbank using the donations to assist the 600 charities it supports in South Australia.
Combined, the money raised on the night is enough to supply food to breakfast programs at four schools thanks to Foodbank’s generous suppliers and its ability to deliver staple dietary items for around a quarter of the retail cost.
And there is still plenty of opportunity to donate!
Cans of Opportunity are on display at IGA and Foodland supermarkets and Bendigo Bank branches until the end of June, allowing customers to donate as they do their shopping or banking.
In addition, almost 2000 cans of Opportunity were given away after the Power-Blues game, with supporters asked to take them home and fill them with spare change through the remainder of the season.
They can be returned to Port Adelaide merchandise stalls at any Power game at AAMI Stadium, the club (Queen St, Alberton), Foodbank (377a Cross Rd, Edwardstown) or any Bendigo Bank branch until the end of the AFL season.
Port Adelaide and Foodbank thank their partners in the Power to End Hunger mission.
