IT was a disappointing year from a team perspective but it still presented some wonderful highlights.
Today portadelaidefc.com.au takes a look at some of the best goals of the season.
From snaps and hooks to bouncing efforts from the pocket, we saw some rippers in part one of our top ten goals of the year.
Here is part two featuring the goals we think make up our top 5.
5. Paddy Ryder v St Kilda Round 16
He’s one of the biggest guys on the list but Paddy Ryder showed he can still compete at ground level, and finish with class. A long ball deep inside 50 came off the pack and it was roved nicely by Ryder. From a tight angle on the boundary line and with barely any daylight between the goalposts, the big man rolled the ball home thanks to a kind bounce which took it over the defender on the line.
4. Jared Polec v Western Bulldogs Round 13
On a Thursday night at Adelaide Oval Polec was at his best, scoring two goals from almost identical positions hard up against the boundary line, almost at the intersection with the 50-metre line. Both were good but this one was just slightly better given the degree of difficulty for a left footer. His drop punt on the run was sublime and he celebrated with a high five to a supporter in the crowd. The goal earned him a goal of the year nomination.
3. Sam Powell-Pepper v Gold Coast Round 9
Another goal of the year nomination and quite frankly unlucky to come in at number three, Powell-Pepper provided a rare highlight on a dreary day in Shanghai. It started when he accidentally bumped an umpire and then went to the boundary line to apologise as the ball came back inside 50. Realising he was free to run onto the ball, he found possession and ran towards goal only to slip over under the weight of a tackle onto his back. But the youngster was composed and creative enough to engineer a shot over his head and just under the outstretched arm of another opponent.
2. Jared Polec v Collingwood Round 22
Polec’s second goal of the year nomination in our list was nothing short of brilliant. He showed all of his
1. Steven Motlop v Adelaide Round 8
We decided it was the pick of the bunch based on the poise, class and importance of the goal which won the Power the first Showdown of the year inside the last 30 seconds. We’ve all seen it plenty of times but go ahead and watch it again. From the centre bounce, having just gone behind after a goal to Mitch McGovern, the ball found its way to Dougal Howard who simply hoofed it forward. McGovern got tangled with a teammate, Sam Gray collected the ball and gave a quick handpass to Motlop, who stepped around an opponent, steadied and split the middle despite the pressure of four opponents.
