SHOWDOWN medallist Travis Boak thinks he was lucky to come home with the medal for the second time in his career after the Port Adelaide’s record 75-point win over the Crows, and he feels even luckier to have put in a strong performance wearing a guernsey he described as “armour”.

Boak claimed 10 votes from the judges to claim the medal by one vote over young guns Xavier Duursma and Connor Rozee.

It was a workmanlike effort from the former captain, who finished with 24 disposals, four clearances and a goal, and he felt pride in the performance by the team wearing the iconic ‘prison bar’ guernsey.

“I think I’m pretty lucky,” Boak said after being awarded the medal for the first time since 2013.

“There were probably five or six others that could have had it.

“It’s a great honour to put that guernsey on. I think the last time we did it was Richmond here (in the 2014 Elimination Final) and that was a pretty good day as well, and we haven’t lost in that guernsey in your time I don’t think Kenny (Hinkley).

“It is a great honour to play my role in that jumper.”

The Power was granted permission to wear the iconic guernsey that has enjoyed so much success during the club’s 150-year history to mark the anniversary in the big game against its biggest AFL rival.

It also intends to petition the AFL to wear the guernsey in each Showdown going forward.

The pride in the guernsey was evident in Boak’s remarks.

“Every time you put it on it means a lot and you’re representing more than just yourself,” he explained.

“You’ve got your teammates, you’ve got past history, you’ve got everyone involved in the footy club, you’ve got everyone who is involved in the Port Adelaide area. There’s so much history in that jumper and every time you put it on, it’s like armour for us.

“(Brad Ebert) turned up tonight and some of the stuff he was doing in the first half was like ‘wow’.

“That jumper, the rich history he’s had with that jumper and even some of the young kids they absorb that energy and there’s no doubt we made our fans proud tonight in our 150th celebration in a Showdown representing that guernsey.

“I think we showed that we’re pretty keen to wear it in every Showdown. The meaning to it is huge and if we can wear it in every Showdown will mean even more.”
