JAY SCHULZ could return to action sooner rather than later according to senior coach Ken Hinkley after the key forward sprained his foot in Port Adelaide's 25-point win over Essendon on Tuesday night.

Schulz booted two goals before going down in a marking contest with Michael Hurley during the third term at Etihad Stadium.

At full stretch, Schulz appeared to land awkwardly on his right foot before Hurley's hand made contact near his ankle.

Match Report

The Power's triple leading goalkicker was in visible pain as he was assisted from the ground and was substituted from the remainder of the match.

But Hinkley, while cautious, is confident careful management could see Schulz return by the opening round of the home-and-away season.

Schulz played through a similar injury for two months in 2013 and will benefit from a reduced playing schedule with just one trial game left in the two weeks leading up to the season start, as well as the ability to 'de-load' the pressure on his foot using the club's high performance equipment.

"Clearly we won't know until we get a chance to check it [and] scan it," Hinkley said after the game.

"It's a mid-foot sprain; Jay did the same thing last year and played through [the injury] with no problems.

"If he's fine we'll play him, if he's not then we won't take a risk.

"I'm very confident about [him playing] Round 1, but he's got to see a doctor who is going to see what it looks like."
