Academy wins final game of the year
Inaugural Academy season ends on a high note.
However the victory was soured by a concussion to one of the Magpies' leading season-possession getters, Tom Gray, midway through the second term.
Gray's day was ended when he was was dealt a head-high hit from Glenelg's Tylah Saunders and was stretchered off the ground with concussion.
Port Adelaide stormed home to record its fifth win of the season, which was set up with five unanswered goals in the first term and a handful of contributors around the ground.
The youthful side flew out of the blocks and showed plenty of upside for the future.
The Magpies' ball movement was swift and its defensive pressure probably the highest it had been all season.
Robbie Young and Declan Hamilton's run across half-back and in the middle kicked the Magpies into gear and the first-quarter goals were shared between Hamilton, Cooper, Davidson, Young and Hawkins, helping the visitors to a 34 point lead at the first break.
Port Adelaide's lead could have been more had the young side not overturned the ball at times in the opening term.
The Bays, fighting to retain fifth spot and make the Reserves final series, swung the momentum after Gray's concussion and put on four goals halfway through the second term.
But a steadier from Ben Haren and two late goals to Sharrad gave the Magpies a five-goal advantage at the main break.
The pressure was again mounted on by the Magpies and its dominance continued throughout the second half.
Port produced a relentless, hard-running brand of football which resulted in seven goals to the Bays' one in the third term, and five-to-two in the final to seal the victory.
Young, Cooper, Gordon and Sharrad did the damage up forward for the Black and White, booting 13 majors between them.
Sharrad finished the match with 31 possessions.
His best-on-ground performance was closely followed by Ben Sawford, who recorded 30 disposals, (six clearances, two marks, seven inside 50s).
