BEN NEWTON will become the 152nd player to represent Port Adelaide in the AFL after being confirmed as a late call up for the Power’s game against the GWS Giants at StarTrack Oval this afternoon.

Newton and Paul Stewart will replace Alipate Carille and Hamish Hartlett in the selected Power lineup after the two senior players were struck by illness before the game.

The club’s GM Football Peter Rohde told portadelaidefc.com.au Carlile and Hartlett were deemed to unwell to take part in the game, but Newton was particularly deserving of his AFL debut.

“He’s been in ripping form all season and it’s great for him to get his opportunity,” Rohde said.

“We think the conditions will suit him and it’s a great chance for him to get out there and show what he can do at this level.

While Carlile and Hartlett will miss Saturday’s game with gastroenteritis, Rohde says they’ll be fit to play against Fremantle in Round 8.

“They’ve have gastro since yesterday and are a bit better today but we felt they were too flat and not worth the risk in an important game for the footy club.”

Newton and Stewart will start on the bench with Aaron Young, while Jarman Impey is the Power’s nominated substitute.
