AFL.com.au writer Harry Thring has picked what he thinks will be our best 22 in 2014.

The 22 includes Alipate Carlile, Jackson Trengove, Jay Schulz and Robbie Gray, who Ken Hinkley says will all be fit to play in Round 1.

Harry Thring's Round 1 team
B: Tom Jonas, Alipate Carlile, Jarman Impey
HB: Cameron O'Shea, Jackson Trengove, Jasper Pittard
C: Kane Cornes, Brad Ebert, Jared Polec
HF: Robbie Gray, Justin Westhoff, Angus Monfries
F: Paul Stewart, Jay Schulz, Chad Wingard
FOLL: Matthew Lobbe, Travis Boak, Hamish Hartlett
INT: Ollie Wines, Andrew Moore, Matt White
SUB: Matthew Broadbent

Harry Thring says: The Power are building a seriously intimidating midfield unit with the likes of Boak, Hartlett, Ebert and Lobbe joined by Wingard, Wines, Monfries, Gray, Polec and even White. They'll get good drive out of defence through Pittard and O'Shea and the last line of Jonas, Carlile and Impey can handle talls or smalls. Polec and White have settled wonderfully since arriving at Alberton last October and offer outside speed, with Polec in particular showing signs he's set to enjoy a career-best season. Jay Schulz will again be the prime attacking target, but the Power have countless avenues to goal with Stewart, Monfries, Gray and the entire midfield all capable of kicking multiple majors.

The side features three new faces for 2014, with exciting 21-year-old Jared Polec named on a wing, Richmond recruit Matt White picked on the bench and the Power's first draft pick Jarman Impey selected in defence.

There are also some notable absentees.

Thring couldn't find spots for veterans Dom Cassisi and Tom Logan, who both featured in the club's 2013 Finals campaign.

Young defenders Jack Hombsch and Tom Clurey - who have both impressed in pre-season, playing all three games - were squeezed out of the side that faced St Kilda by the more experienced duo of Trengove and Carlile.

Key forward John Butcher booted three goals and had three score assists against the Saints, but didn't make Thring's forward line, which had just the two talls of Westhoff and Schulz. Paul Stewart's calf injury, which has him in doubt for Round 1, could open up a spot for Butcher.

Youngsters Sam Colquhoun and Jake Neade - who both played more than 10 games in 2013 - will also find themselves playing for the Magpies in the SANFL according to Thring.

Port Adelaide's team to face Carlton will be named on Thursday evening at 6pm, with the squad trimmed to 22 on Friday at 4.30pm. Stay tuned to portadelaidefc.com.au for all the selection news
