Ambassador to carry Australian Flag in Glasgow
Meares given national honour
Meares, 30, is a two-time Olympic gold medallist and acts as an ambassador for the club, as well as working as part of Power Community Ltd’s female programs.
She was confirmed as Australia’s flag bearer in an announcement by the Australian Olympic Committee this morning.
In addition to her two Olympic golds, Meares has won gold at the Commonwealth Games four times.
Should she medal at the Glasgow games, which starts on July 23, she will become the nation’s most successful female Commonwealth games cyclist, surpassing Kathy Watt who medalled seven times in four games.
Chief executive officer Keith Thomas told portadelaidefc.com.au the club was proud of Anna’s achievements and the honour of carrying the Australian flag in Glasgow.
“Anna is a terrific ambassador for our club and a representative of cycling in Australia,” said Mr Thomas.
“She’s widely recognised for her work in the community and we’re fortunate to have her involved in our club’s community programs.
“Most importantly, she’s an inspiration to women and girls right around the country, and certainly we’re lucky enough to see that first hand.
“All the players, coaches, staff and supporters of the club wish Anna and the national team the best of luck in Glasgow.”
