DESPITE the loss to Melbourne in Round 2 of the NAB Cup, the Power unearthed more young talent, with a host of new recruits impressing in just their second game in Power colours.

Prized first-round pick Ollie Wines showed why his inside game was rated so highly as a junior, smashing in hard to packs all day to win a game-high ten clearances (out of the Power’s 21).

Wines was workmanlike from the start, his massive contested possession count of 15, testament to his willingness to put his head over the ball again and again. He also won six free kicks, a number of those for high tackles in the pack.

Kane Mitchell was dominant in the first quarter, using his incredible running ability to find space and rack up 12 possessions to lead all players at the first break. His second quarter wasn’t as prolific but he worked back into the game well to finish with 26 touches, seven marks, three rebound 50s, three inside 50s and three tackles.

Rotating between half back and wing, Sam Colquhoun showed he can hold his own at AFL level, adding dash to the Power’s rebound from defence.

The Power’s only pre-season draft pick showed pace and poise as he racked up 19 touches (10 kicks, nine handballs), five inside 50s and an important goal in the fourth quarter – coming from a courageous mark running with the flight of the ball.

Half backs Lewis Stevenson and Campbell Heath showed promising signs as they pressed their claim for a spot in our Round 1 team – when we’ll play the Demons.

Stevenson used the ball well with his 20 possessions and showed his defensive side with three tackles while Heath had 15 touches and six marks as he set up play from defence.

Jake Neade was lively again up forward and while he only had eight touches, his forward pressure was noticeable with four tackles and numerous other chases. He finished with 1.1.

One of the Power’s ‘older’ guard (showing just how young the team was), Hamish Hartlett, was class all day as he tried to lift the Power over the line with 23 possessions, five inside 50s, two goals and a huge supergoal.
