IN a bittersweet stroke for Port Adelaide, defender Nick Salter has been removed from the long-term injury list and is available to play football this weekend, but rookie Kane Mitchell will be forced back to the SANFL as a result.

Salter was cleared to return to football by club fitness staff on Wednesday after suffering a foot fracture during the pre-season.

He will play for aligned SANFL side Woodville-West Torrens this weekend, initially in the reserves.

But his recovery from long-term injury means Kane Mitchell - the rookie who was upgraded to replace him for the first three rounds of the season - will be placed back on the rookie list.

Mitchell has been the substitute for Port Adelaide in its first three wins of the season and impressed pundits with his hard-running attack on the ball.

While he was disappointed to be taken off the senior list, Mitchell says it is great news for Salter to be cleared of injury.

"It's great to have Salts back - he's a great guy, a great player and I'm looking forward to playing with him in the SANFL,” Mitchell told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“Now I’ll go back to the Eagles and continue to train hard and hopefully I'll earn the next upgrade.

“I knew my stint at AFL for this part of the season was going to be short-lived so I made the most of it, and it means a lot to have had a few fans know my name and see my number 37 on their backs.”

Both Salter and Mitchell will play for the Eagles – the former trying to press for selection while the latter works hard to earn promotion back to the rookie list midway through the year.

All AFL clubs are permitted to upgrade one rookie to the senior list after Round 11.
