End Game

Ken Hinkley said he didn’t believe Port Adelaide could win from where it was at half-time, so to come from 41 points down, 19 minutes into the third term must have been unexpected.

The late-game surge from Port Adelaide showed what it is capable of doing – reeling in sides in the second half by piling on the goals.

Of concern though for the team will be its seven scoring shots to half time, compared to the Eagles’ 20.

It highlighted the visitors’ dominance of the game up to that point and the ease with which it worked forward to score.

Port was also tracking below 50% disposal efficiency for much of the first half, a stat which it needed to rectify if it was to win the game (the Power did finish the game slightly ahead in this area).

But despite the horror first half, the Power’s unbelievable comeback can’t be denied and the stats sheet reflects its sustained dominance over what proved to be the most critical part of the game.

The spread of goalkickers with Justin Westhoff shut out of the game and Jay Schulz battling to win the ball cleanly was encouraging.

Both teams had 12 scorers apiece, but the Power had more of the six-point variety – eight to the Eagles’ six.

Kane Cornes and Hamish Hartlett were undoubtedly Port Adelaide’s biggest contributors – both cracking a ton of AFL Fantasy points with Cornes netting 26 touches and 8 marks, while Hartlett lead the tackles and clearances count.

Cam O’Shea had ten touches in the final term – justifying his naming in the best players with an excellent effort running forward from centre.

Port has surged in its last three matches to overcome its opposition and it has sent the football world into frenzy over the exciting brand of football it has produced.

But against a hardened North Melbourne opponent which lost to top four favourites Hawthorn by just three points on Sunday, it will need to perform that brand for all four quarters in Hobart.
