Cornes likely to tag Ablett
Ken Hinkley says he remains in touch with Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett and reveals Kane Cornes is the obvious candidate to curb his influence this weekend.
But Ken Hinkley and his players have no time to bask in the glory of a perfect start to the season, with a game against a dangerous Gold Coast Suns side this Saturday night at Metricon Stadium.
Playing Gold Coast on its own turf won’t be an easy task – its continual improvement against established sides, coupled with its home ground advantage means that Port Adelaide will have to be playing its best football on Saturday.
One of the hardest task in this weekend’s game will be curbing the influence of Gold Coast’s best player Gary Ablett, who this weekend will be coming up against a Port Adelaide team led by former mentor and close friend Ken Hinkley.
It is no secret that Ken and Gary share a friendship from their time at Geelong and the Suns.
Hinkley told media this morning that he remains in close contact with Ablett.
“We are very close (and) we have been for a long time, he is an amazing football,” said Hinkley.
“I’ve been lucky (that) the best two players I have seen I think both have the same name,” he said of Ablett and his father Gary senior, who played with Hinkley at Geelong.
Hinkley revealed Port Adelaide’s reigning best and fairest Kane Cornes was likely to have the job on restricting Ablett this weekend.
Cornes is one of the best taggers of the last decade and although Ablett had a standout performance in Round 1 against St Kilda, his influence has been curbed by good tagging efforts from Sydney’s Kieran Jack and Brisbane’s Andrew Raines in the past two weeks.
“He certainly has a good record (against Ablett),” said Hinkley of Cornes.
“He could be one of the ones that we look to use, we’re not going to try and trick the world: Kane Cornes runs with players, he ran with Patrick Dangerfield on the weekend and if he runs outside there on the weekend and stands beside Garry Ablett I don’t think anyone will be surprised.”
Port Adelaide will announce its team for Saturday’s game on portadelaidefc.com.au at 6:00pm on Thursday night.
