THE AFL’s isolation period saw players do all sorts of strange things with their hair but Port Adelaide defender Jarrod Lienert has waited until footy is back to make a change to his look.
The long-haired big-kicking backman is about to shave his head, as part of a fundraising effort for the World’s Greatest Shave.
On July 5, Lienert will let his girlfriend do the honours with the clippers – all to help a young boy who is battling cancer.
“She’s not overly happy with the look but she knows it’s for a good cause,” Lienert said of asking his girlfriend to shave his head.
“As soon as we get back (to Adelaide) the clippers will be out and it’ll be coming off.
“It’s going to be a big change I guess.”
Lienert is part of Team Oscar, a group of Murray Bridge locals who have banded together to raise money for Oscar Noye, a brave two-year-old facing the fight of his young life.
“One of my good mates back home called Josh Noye, his son Oscar has Leukemia and he’s got a bit of a fight ahead of him for the next two and a half years with some treatment and all that,” Lienert said.
“The initial response has been good but there’s still a bit of a fight for him and for his family, so that’s why it’s great to raise money and support them.
“There’s a big crew of people from Murray Bridge that are shaving their heads so I thought it was a good chance to join in and raise some money from it.”
Team Oscar has raised more than $53,000 so far, passing its $50,000 goal, but still seeking more donations.
And Lienert is not the only sporting star to join the team.
“(Hawthorn’s) Chad Wingard’s another player who has been doing it and Alex Bolt, the tennis player, is taking part in Team Oscar, they’re calling it,” he said.
“Over $50,000 so far and I’ve raised just over $1,000 personally, so proud to play my part.
“Any more donations will be much appreciated.”
As for the Port Adelaide defender’s hair, he is going the whole hog - a buzz cut right down to number one.
“I’ll go the number one all over I think. I haven’t had short hair since 2015,” Lienert said.
“I haven’t had a genuine hair cut in that long so the long locks have been around for a while so they’re all coming off for a good cause.
“I think the natural conclusion was starting to fall out. Looking at my dad and my poppa and all that.
“It’s going to be different but I’m looking forward to it.”
